A large watercolour painting by the artist Evelyn Stuart Hardy, shown here in a high quality 18th Century frame. The subject is missionary John Williams "The Martyr of Polynesia", travelling around the islands of the South Seas in the early 19th Century, preaching to the islanders.

Evelyn Stuart Hardy was born to an artistic family in 1865 in Bristol. Her original name was Beatrice Evelyn Elizabeth Hardy, although it is as Evelyn Stuart Hardy that her work is known. She died, unmarried, in Cuckfield, Sussex in 1935.

The artist was a prolific illustrator primarily of children's books and produced thousands over the years between 1890 and 1922.

She also wrote books and these, and the ones with her illustrations are still extremely popular. Her original artwork rarely comes to the market.
