This box is of rare exceptional quality, dating to circa 1850.

This wonderful example of a Coromandel slope is in beautiful condition with a circular etched blank cartouche to the top and similar etched lock surround with working key. To the edges of the box are inlaid brass strips.

On opening the writing box, it reveals three pencil note plates set into a gilt tooled leather surround. The compartment above includes two original ink wells, two stamp sections and a blue velvet covered pen section which all lift to reveal the original satinwood interior. To the lid of the box, adding to the quality of the piece, is a tooled, leather letter compartment, which slides forward for ease of access to the letters. It also includes a blue velvet covered section which holds bone letter openers and two etched propelling pencils. The interior is further enhanced by etched brass corner stays.

The box further opens to reveal the original blue velvet writing slope under which to top and lower section is a beautiful satin wood interior. The top section is accessed via a second etched lock with second working key.

This exotic wood was selected for its rarity and due to the fascination of the exciting new timbers coming in from all corners of the British Empire. Coromandel wood is also known as Calamander wood and was found mainly in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). It is no longer harvested.
